How to Manage Nappy Rash at Home

Does nappy rash have your little one feeling irritated and uncomfortable? There's nothing worse than seeing your baby in discomfort, yet 30% of babies and toddlers experience nappy rash at any one time. *

The good news is, nappy rash can be relieved quickly and naturally by making simple changes at home.

1. Change Nappies Often

We know that the leading cause for nappy rash is exposure to urine and faeces for a prolonged period. For this reason, the number one thing you can do from home to limit nappy rash is to change nappies often. If your child is wet overnight, changing their nappy first thing in the morning is vital. Friction will also increase the occurrence of chaffing and inflammation once they start moving in a moist nappy.

2. Toilet Training

To break the cycle of nappy rash, toilet training is the best way to leave nappy rash in the past. It is however, easier said than done. Provided your child is ready for nappy-free time or day time toilet training, this will minimise the occurrence of nappy rash. A highly absorbent night time nappy will further support your progress.

3. Natural Antibacterial

You've likely invested in barrier creams that create a physical layer between the nappy and your baby's skin. This allows for the skin to heal while still wearing a nappy. Barrier creams containing Zinc Oxide are recommended over Talc products by the Raising Children network as they  provide the skin with a natural antibacterial layer to minimise the occurrence of infection and inflammation - safely. Zinc Oxide further protects the skin against irritants such as ammonia found in urine, and is praised for its barrier protection and antibacterial relief.

4. Anti-inflammatory and Healing

For immediate relief of itching, redness and swelling, look for products containing Colloidal Oatmeal. Avenanthramides found in oats has anti-inflammatory and antihistaminic activity while the cellulose and fibre found in oats neutralise the pH of dry itchy skin, making it effective to soothe and calm irritation. Colloidal Oatmeal also contains saponins for gentle cleansing and antibacterial properties to further prevent flare ups, and prevent moisture build-up.

Natural oils which restore moisture and soothe the skin are also recommended. Almond Oil in particular is a vitamin E rich oil that delivers superior soothing and healing properties to chapped, dry and compromised skin. Likewise, humectants such as Sodium PCA can be utilised for their natural moisturising factors to support hydration to skin which may be compromised due to wearing nappies.

Don't have these ingredients at home?  Containing a blend of the above mentioned powerhouse healers, Dermavive Nappy Rash Cream combines the powerful antibacterial, hydrating and healing benefits of natural ingredients to protect, restore and heal the symptoms of infant nappy rash.

When combined with the use of high absorbency nappies, nappy-free time and toilet training, this product can be used at each nappy change and post-bath without sensitivity or side effects. Natural Colloidal Oatmeal is gentle on sensitive skin and recommended for use on chapped, dry and broken skin without complications or irritation.
